''House On Fire'' ; a leading performance arts venue in Swaziland

‘House On Fire was established by Director Jiggs Thorne, in partnership with his brother Sholto Thorne in 2000.

Jiggs, a poet, performance artist and sculptor, has always held a passionate interest in the arts. Growing up in Swaziland greatly influenced his work and, as his artistic skills developed, he began to conceptualize a venue in which to display and grow the arts in his country. It was this thought that inspired the initial concepts of House on Fire.

Not wanting to limit the creative vision to one art form, the Thorne brothers created a space that could cater for all types of expression. A small gallery and carving studio was designed as a fine art exhibition space and, forever fascinated with contrast, the concept of an Afro-Shakespearean globe theatre for performing artists began to take shape.

From concept to creation, architect Sarah Calburn helped turn the vision into a reality which is ever evolving, through continuous additions and modifications. Many talented artisans and crafters from across the Kingdom have added their magic and contributed to the continuous evolution of the spaces and places that are House on Fire.

The complementary characteristics and shared aspirations of Jiggs and his brother Sholto, created balance and solid foundations for enterprise at House On Fire. The practical, technical and organisational talents of Sholto and his eventing team combine with Jiggs’ artistic programming to create a union of living interactive art.

Over the years, House on Fire has established itself as Swaziland’s leading performance arts venue having hosting a multitude of global artists including Hugh Masekela, Lady Smith Black Mambazo, soul singer Joss Stone from the UK and South African favorites Freshlyground.

Today, House On Fire hosts music and arts performances, caters for private events, corporate functions and weddings. The in house Events Management team also create bespoke events in the venue grounds and at remote locations, offering a full management and equipment hire service.
